When I am Weak

After 21-days asleep in the hospital in January, I awoke to find that the muscles in my arms and legs had wasted away.

It has been said that every day of unconsciousness, the body loses more than 10-percent of their muscle mass. I’m living proof of the truth of that statement.

Since being discharged from the hospital in late February, I have been fighting to get my strength back. For a while, it looked as though a complete recovery was in the offing. This week, however, my weakness has returned. My doctors and physical therapists said these days would come, but I thought they were all behind me.

This setback has made me feel terrible. But, I remembered something in 2 Corinthians 12 that made me stop feeling sorry for myself. The apostle Paul wrote, “Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong,” (2 Corinthians 12:10).

Sometimes it is only when we are weak (physically or spiritually) that people can see what is really important to us. I hope that people will be able to see Christ’s strength in me despite my physical and spiritual weaknesses.

Remember, someone is watching you. What will they see?

  1. Thank you for being transparent in this blog. Great testimony of what kind of fighter you are. Praying God continues to bless you with good days.

    1. Thank you, April, for reading it and for commenting.I have never really written in the first person before, but what I experienced may be helpful to someone who had undergone a similar trial. My hope is that my work glorifies God because he is the reason why I’m here.

  2. I’ll be completely honest with you, John, and say that I didn’t expect to see you standing on your own two feet again after finding out about what happened to you. You went through a deep valley health wise, which I know you’re more than well aware of. But I’m very glad you’re on the mend, however slowly it may be. Have been praying for you and will continue to do so (3 John 1:2).

    1. Thanks, brother. I’m just glad that what happened to me provided a way to build my faith and trust in God. As Paul wrote, “the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel,” (Philippians 1:12).
